The Brutal Beauty of Climbing Gaopo: An 86km Guiyang Cycling Route That Broken My Legs

After days of relentless rain, the sun finally came out, and we immediately grabbed our road bikes to head out. The original plan discussed before leaving the city center was a manageable 60km ride. I even casually asked if there would be much climbing, and the response was, "We'll see how we feel."

Well, we went for it... and I completely underestimated what we were getting into!

That brutal 1,000m+ of elevation gain over an 86km round trip absolutely dazed me. 😵‍💫 Don't get me wrong, the panoramic alpine scenery at the top of Gaopo is stunning—but honestly, when you feel like you're about to collapse, you don't even have the energy to look at the view! 😖

Guizhou is undeniably a paradise for vertical climbing. If you live for intense elevation and steep gradients, this is your playground. But as for me? I am officially retiring from hard climbs. From now on, I am strictly a leisure rider. Please don't invite me to any more mountain climbs! 🤚🏾🤚🏾

Essential Insider Tips for Cycling Gaopo (Guiyang)

If you are brave enough to tackle the Gaopo cycling route, you must set out incredibly early in the morning. Here is why:

• Beat the Heat: Guizhou's summer sun gets intense. Early morning temperatures are significantly more forgiving for a heavy 1,000m climb.

• Traffic Safety: Leaving early means you share the mountain roads with fewer cars and, more importantly, fewer motorcycles and modified cars racing up the hills. It is a much safer window for road cyclists.
