Tianzi Mountain, is a highland mountain area in Yunlong County, northwest of Dali. Known locally for alpine meadows, open mountain views, grazing animals, wildflowers, and a quieter natural setting, it offers a very different riding experience from the popular Erhai Lake cycling route.
This is not a casual lakeside ride. The Tianzi Mountain route is a high-altitude e-MTB ride with long climbing, open meadow sections, and changing mountain weather. For riders looking for a scenic but physically demanding bike tour in China, it is one of the more rewarding mountain routes in the Dali region.
Cycle Quest China works with a local Dali partner who can arrange vehicle transfer to the riding area. The drive takes around 2.5 hours from Dali, so this route is best planned as a full-day mountain biking experience rather than a short half-day ride.

Tianzi Mountain has the same difficulty rating as Jiuding Mountain, but it feels more remote and scenic. Compared with Zhemo Mountain, it is less focused on technical downhill. Compared with Niaodiao Mountain, it has more distance and climbing, making it a stronger endurance route.
What Makes Tianzi Mountain Special?
The main appeal of Tianzi Mountain is its open alpine meadow landscape. Riders can expect grassland riding, wide mountain views, natural tracks, and a feeling of being far away from Dali’s busier tourist routes.
The route climbs from around 2,200 m to about 3,200 m, so the AMFLOW DJI-powered e-MTB is very useful. It reduces the strain of the long ascent, but riders still need fitness, balance, and basic off-road confidence.
Who Is This Ride Suitable For?
This route is suitable for intermediate riders, fit outdoor travelers, and cyclists who want a more scenic highland mountain biking route near Dali. It is not suitable for complete beginners or casual city-bike riders.
A hardtail mountain bike can handle the route, but an e-MTB is recommended because of the 1,000 m of climbing and the higher elevation.
Safety Notes
Bring a helmet, gloves, windproof jacket, water, snacks, sunscreen, and a phone power bank. Weather can change quickly above 3,000 m, and mobile signal may be weak in the mountain area.
Because Tianzi Mountain is far from central Dali, local transfer and route support are strongly recommended. Always confirm road access, weather, and local conditions before departure.
