D4 – Erhai East Shore Tour

Most visitors see Erhai from the west shore, with Dali Old Town at their backs. The east shore is the other side of that view: drier, rockier hills where the road is cut into the slope above the water, and the whole Cangshan range lined up across the lake. The ride starts at Xingsheng Bridge in Xiaguan, where the Xi'er River leaves the lake, and heads north. Past the first big viewpoint the road begins to follow the hillside, with rock on one side and open water on the other. You pass Lixiangbang, a blue-and-white resort town stacked on the cliffs, climb Tianjing Pavilion on the Luoquan Peninsula for the view back across the lake, and finish at Wenbi Village, a former fishing village where a painted road runs down to the water. About 58 km and 2.5 hours in the saddle, spread over the day.

Is this ride for me?

  • Fitness: 58 km sounds long, but it is about 2.5 hours of riding with plenty of stops, and the motor flattens the rises. If you are comfortable on a bike for a morning, you'll be fine.
  • Surface: paved road and lakeside path. Along the hillside the road rises and dips rather than staying flat.
  • Sun: the east shore is open and exposed, with little shade on the hillside sections. Bring sunscreen, sunglasses and water.
  • Lunch: not included. Your guide will stop somewhere along the east shore. Bai dishes worth trying include sour-and-spicy fish, stir-fried haicai (a flower that grows in the lake) and pea-flour porridge.
  • Bike and size: send your height when you book so we can set up the right frame. Our Dali e-bikes fit riders from about 160 to 185 cm.

Difficulty

  1. Arched Xingsheng Bridge spanning the Xi'er River in Xiaguan under a blue sky

    Xingsheng Bridge

    兴盛大桥

The ride starts at Xingsheng Bridge in Xiaguan, a white multi-arched bridge with ornamental towers, at the point where the Xi'er River leaves Erhai. It is the lake's only natural outlet. From here the water runs west and eventually joins the Mekong on its way to Southeast Asia. Xiaguan is Dali's modern city of offices and apartment blocks, with none of the Old Town's courtyards. It is famous, though, for its wind. The first line of the old Dali saying "wind of Xiaguan, flowers of Shangguan, snow of Cangshan, moon of Erhai" is about this end of the lake.

Take a couple of minutes on the bank to check your saddle height and helmet, and to get a first photo with the bridge behind you. Then the city thins out and Erhai begins to open up on your left as you head up the east shore. Your guide leads the way out through the city streets, and the lake views start soon after, once the buildings thin out along the shore.

  2. Wide blue Erhai with drowned trees and wading birds in the shallows

    Erhai East Shore Viewpoint

    海东观景台

Once Xiaguan is behind you, the east-shore viewpoint is where you first see the whole lake at once. Erhai is about 40 km long and up to 9 km wide, sitting at roughly 1,970 m. Across the water the Cangshan range lines up along the entire western shore. It has nineteen peaks, the highest of them, Malong, at 4,122 m. Dali Old Town and the villages of the west shore sit at their foot. The shallows in front of you are dotted with drowned trees and wading birds.

This side of the lake feels very different from the west. The hills are drier and rockier, and the road is cut into the slope rather than running across flat farmland, so from here on you ride above the water instead of beside it. In the morning the sun is behind you and lights up the mountains across the lake, which is why this viewpoint photographs best early in the day. The views are clearest in the dry season, from about November to April. In the summer rains, the peaks are often wrapped in cloud.

  3. Village street sloping down to Erhai between white buildings, mountains across the water

    Lixiangbang

    理想邦

Lixiangbang, which translates as "Dream Land", is a resort town built into the cliffs above the east-shore road in Haidong, looking across the water to Jinsuo Island and the Cangshan range. It was designed to look like Santorini, with whitewashed walls, blue trim and stairways winding down toward the lake. Greek newspapers have written about it as China's copy of their island. Whatever you make of the idea, the setting is real. The houses stack up the hillside, and every gap between them frames the lake.

It's mostly holiday homes, cafés and wedding photographers, so treat it as a short stop for photos and a stretch rather than a place to explore for hours. Built into a cliff, it is a place for walking rather than riding, so plan to explore it on foot. One landscaped section charges its own admission, but you don't need it to get the view. For the best shot, look down one of the streets that drop straight toward the water, with the lake at the bottom and the mountains across it.

  4. Tianjing Pavilion rising above its courtyard, with Erhai Lake behind

    Tianjing Pavilion

    天镜阁

Tianjing Pavilion stands on the tip of the Luoquan Peninsula, a rocky headland on the east shore with water on three sides. Its steep sides and wide views made it a defensive position in ancient times. The peninsula is named after Luoquan, a monk of the Nanzhao kingdom, which ruled from this lake basin more than a thousand years ago and was granted this cliff to build a temple on. The present pavilion is a four-storey, eight-sided tower. Around it stand a cluster of halls and a pagoda, all part of one scenic area.

A lift takes you up to the second-to-top floor, and from there it is a short climb to the top. It's the best elevated viewpoint on the whole east shore. Cangshan fills the far side of the lake, and you can follow the east-shore road you've just ridden along the water below. It's also a good place to get out of the sun and take a proper break before the final stretch north to Wenbi Village. Entry is part of the Luoquan Peninsula scenic area; ask your guide what is included on the day.

  5. Traditional painted gateway at the entrance to Wenbi Village on Erhai's east shore

    Wenbi Village

    文笔村

Wenbi is a small village on the lakeside slope in Haidong, on the east shore of Erhai. It began as a Bai fishing and quarrying village and was losing its people until artists and guesthouse owners started moving in. Today it has a few dozen guesthouses, cafés and photo studios, most of them looking straight across the water to Cangshan's nineteen peaks. The village road down to the lake has been painted in rainbow stripes, and that road is the reason most people come.

The stretch of east-shore road from Wase to Wenbi is often picked as the best cycling on the whole east side of the lake: about 13 km, quiet, with open views most of the way. That makes it a fitting last leg. At the village, ride or walk down the painted road to the waterline for the classic shot of the stripes running into the lake. The late-afternoon light is good here, because the sun drops toward Cangshan across the water. It's an easy place to end the day with a drink at one of the lakeside cafés before the shuttle back.

We did a 34km loop along the river and had a wonderful time. The bikes were in great condition and the staff were very helpful. Pick up and drop off was organised for us, a seamless experience all in all. Definitely recommend.

I had an amazing experience with Cyclequestchina. I rented an e-bike for the day, which came with a Dji 360 camera and bags. The overall quality was very good and I had no issues at all. The pickup at the store was smooth. Before handing over the bike, everything was well explained and I could even choose a route with maps that included popular scenic points accessible by following the GPS. I returned the bike to the store after completing a full round trip. The staff were amazing and I would recommend this experience if you want to see the major scenic points in Yangshuo by yourself.

How was your guide — pace, language, local knowledge? Our guide, Ivan, was the best! He took us on safe paths, looked out for us- and even stopped for us when we wanted to take a photo. In addition- we had our 4 year old daughter with us and he knew when we had to slow down, or be careful- he was extra cautious. My favorite part of the trip was when we stopped for a cold beverage- the view was beautiful, and the drinks were delicious. Ivan was very knowledgeable about the routes, and where to go- this tour was so so great. We did the E bike and that allowed us to enjoy the scenery and mountains, without getting too tired. We also got some amazing photos from Ivan at the end- great photos to help remember how beautiful and fun it was! We can't wait to do another tour with this company!!

The experience of renting the bike tour with CycleQuest was incredible. Our guides, Ivan and Snow, were incredibly attentive, competent, and delightful. They took photos, organized the bikes, and handled everything to ensure our day was perfect and completely safe. We plan to return to China and will book Cyclequest’s services again. I will definitely recommend them to friends.

What a fantastic tour it was by far the best one we have done throughout our one year trip. From start to finish . We were picked up at our hotel in a luxury minibus for us and our 3 brilliant crew . Our driver our cycling guide and our organiser. The equipment was all brand new and immaculate. We stayed in 5 different hotels all excellent . The lads helped us choose food in the restaurants for lunch and dinner. We often stopped for local snacks in the mountains. The cycling routes were amazing the views and local culture were spot on. We did over 300km over 5 rides to altitudes of almost 5000km some days were a bit cloudy but it didn’t stop us we really got a true feel for scenic China . Their organisation and planning and communication was also excellent .We also felt we were on an action movie photo shoot with the number of photos that they took . The trip far exceeded our expectations!

7 day e-bike cycling tour through western sichuan mountains

The pickup and return were super smooth, the bike was in fantastic condition and ready to roll, and riding to Shaofeng Mountain and Jietan Temple was an absolute blast!

We had the most amazing 4 days I can remember 🧡 🚲— thanks so much!!

Whilst staying in Yangshuo the 3 of us booked the 66km e-cycle tour with Cycle Quest China through our hotel (you can of course book directly with them) taking in rice and lotus fields, incredible mountain views, experiencing the natural wonders of the Yangshuo area as well as a fantastic local lunch in a tiny village where the fish, chicken and vegetable’s were so delicious as a result of the local mineral water spring and local farming methods. We had the absolute best day with our expert guides. It was very well coordinated with regular rest and hydration breaks. We were very well taken care of and had the most amazing experience, we are already looking at booking again! Cannot rate this company highly enough! Excellent! 🌟 🚲
