D3 – Erhai West Shore Tour

This is the gentle one. Since 2018 Dali has built a 129 km path right around Erhai Lake as part of a clean-up of the lake, and motor traffic is kept off it. This ride follows the west-shore section north from Dali, with Erhai on your right and the Cangshan range on your left the whole way. You start at Longkan Pier, where a row of dawn redwoods stands at the water's edge, roll through wetland and farmland to the Panxi S-bend, walk out along the Haishe peninsula, and finish in Xizhou, the old Bai merchant town, with its courtyard houses, rice fields and fresh Xizhou baba. A simple lunch is included.

Is this ride for me?

  • Fitness: the path is flat and paved from start to finish. If you can ride a bike, you can do this ride, and the day is about stopping as much as riding.
  • Traffic: motor vehicles are not allowed on the lakeside path. You share it with walkers and other cyclists, and the popular photo spots get busy on weekends and holidays.
  • Sun and shade: shade comes and goes with the trees. Erhai sits at almost 2,000 m and the sun is stronger than it feels, so bring sunscreen and a hat.
  • Toilets and breaks: there are service stations with public toilets along the lakeside path, and you stop regularly anyway.
  • When to come: black-headed gulls winter on the lake from about November to March, the lakeside redwoods turn rust-red in late autumn, and the rice fields around Xizhou are green in July and gold by September.

Difficulty

  1. Lakeside grove and reed-fringed shallows on Erhai's west shore under summer clouds

    Longkan Pier

    龙龛码头

Longkan is an old ferry landing on Erhai's west shore, due east of Dali Old Town and one of the first stops along the lakeside path. It is best known for its row of tall dawn redwoods standing right at the water's edge. In late autumn they turn rust-red, and on a calm morning they are mirrored in the shallows. The sun comes up over the hills of the east shore, directly across the lake, so the early light here is soft and flat across the water.

From about November to March, flocks of black-headed gulls that breed in Siberia spend the winter on Erhai, and Longkan is one of the easiest places to watch them skimming low over the pier. The rest of the year you get reeds, calm water and the Cangshan range behind you.

This is where the lakeside path starts to feel like a ride rather than a town street. It is flat, paved and kept free of motor traffic, and from here it runs about 3 km north to Caicun, with farmland and white-walled Bai villages on your left. Service stations with public toilets are spaced along the path.

  2. Cyclist riding the lakeside path past a white-trunked tree, Erhai and hills ahead

    Panxi S-Bend

    磻溪S弯

Near Panxi village, about 10 km north of Dali Old Town, the lakeside path swings out into the water in a tight S-curve: open lake on one side, wetland meadow on the other, and the Cangshan range rising behind. It is the best-known single image of Erhai's west shore, and it is one of the most photographed spots on the lake.

Panxi is in Yinqiao, the same township as our Dali base, so this stretch of shore is home turf for our guides. They know where to stand to get the whole curve in one frame without a crowd in it. The light is best in the morning, when the sun comes from across the lake and lights up the mountains behind the bend. It gets busy at weekends and during Chinese holidays, so an early start pays off.

The path here is flat, smooth and car-free. Stalls, camping and vehicles are not allowed on the corridor, which keeps it calm even when the photo spot itself is full. Take your time. The ride is easy, and the next stretch north runs through open wetland and fields toward Xizhou.

  3. Tree-lined path through autumn-coloured trees in Haishe Park on Erhai Lake

    Haishe Park

    海舌公园

Haishe means "tongue of the lake", and from above that is exactly what it looks like: a long, narrow strip of land pushing about a kilometre out into Erhai, with water on three sides. It was built up over centuries by sand and silt that the Wanhua Stream carries down from the Cangshan range, and it sits by Jinhe village, just east of Xizhou.

At the entrance stand the "Couple Trees", a willow and a poplar more than a hundred years old whose roots and branches have grown together. Beyond them a shady track runs out along the peninsula under tall trees that turn orange and copper in late autumn, with small fishing boats pulled up along the edge and open lawns where you can sit by the water.

The track out to the tip is flat and wide, and the view back from the end, across the water to the Cangshan range, is one of the widest on the west shore. This is also a good place for a longer break before the last short stretch into Xizhou.

  4. Stone gateway and Bai-style buildings on a square in Xizhou Ancient Town

    Xizhou Ancient Town

    喜洲古镇

Xizhou, about 20 km north of Dali Old Town, is where the ride ends. Between the lake and the mountains, it was one of the richest Bai trading towns on the Tea Horse Road. Its merchant families, the Yan, Yang, Dong and Yin, sent tea, silk and marble as far as Southeast Asia and Tibet. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries they built more than a hundred courtyard houses, many in the classic Bai layout of three wings and a whitewashed screen wall. During the Second World War the American Flying Tigers kept an airstrip and radio station here.

Walk the lanes around the main square and look inside the Yan family compound, now a museum of the town's history and Bai architecture. Look for the Linden Centre too, a 1948 merchant's house restored by an American couple and now a guesthouse. The rice fields in front of it are green in July and gold by September. Don't leave without a Xizhou baba, the town's round flatbread, sold hot around Sifang Square. It comes sweet or savoury, and the savoury spring-onion version is the one to try.

We did a 34km loop along the river and had a wonderful time. The bikes were in great condition and the staff were very helpful. Pick up and drop off was organised for us, a seamless experience all in all. Definitely recommend.

I had an amazing experience with Cyclequestchina. I rented an e-bike for the day, which came with a Dji 360 camera and bags. The overall quality was very good and I had no issues at all. The pickup at the store was smooth. Before handing over the bike, everything was well explained and I could even choose a route with maps that included popular scenic points accessible by following the GPS. I returned the bike to the store after completing a full round trip. The staff were amazing and I would recommend this experience if you want to see the major scenic points in Yangshuo by yourself.

How was your guide — pace, language, local knowledge? Our guide, Ivan, was the best! He took us on safe paths, looked out for us- and even stopped for us when we wanted to take a photo. In addition- we had our 4 year old daughter with us and he knew when we had to slow down, or be careful- he was extra cautious. My favorite part of the trip was when we stopped for a cold beverage- the view was beautiful, and the drinks were delicious. Ivan was very knowledgeable about the routes, and where to go- this tour was so so great. We did the E bike and that allowed us to enjoy the scenery and mountains, without getting too tired. We also got some amazing photos from Ivan at the end- great photos to help remember how beautiful and fun it was! We can't wait to do another tour with this company!!

The experience of renting the bike tour with CycleQuest was incredible. Our guides, Ivan and Snow, were incredibly attentive, competent, and delightful. They took photos, organized the bikes, and handled everything to ensure our day was perfect and completely safe. We plan to return to China and will book Cyclequest’s services again. I will definitely recommend them to friends.

What a fantastic tour it was by far the best one we have done throughout our one year trip. From start to finish . We were picked up at our hotel in a luxury minibus for us and our 3 brilliant crew . Our driver our cycling guide and our organiser. The equipment was all brand new and immaculate. We stayed in 5 different hotels all excellent . The lads helped us choose food in the restaurants for lunch and dinner. We often stopped for local snacks in the mountains. The cycling routes were amazing the views and local culture were spot on. We did over 300km over 5 rides to altitudes of almost 5000km some days were a bit cloudy but it didn’t stop us we really got a true feel for scenic China . Their organisation and planning and communication was also excellent .We also felt we were on an action movie photo shoot with the number of photos that they took . The trip far exceeded our expectations!

Whilst staying in Yangshuo the 3 of us booked the 66km e-cycle tour with Cycle Quest China through our hotel (you can of course book directly with them) taking in rice and lotus fields, incredible mountain views, experiencing the natural wonders of the Yangshuo area as well as a fantastic local lunch in a tiny village where the fish, chicken and vegetable’s were so delicious as a result of the local mineral water spring and local farming methods. We had the absolute best day with our expert guides. It was very well coordinated with regular rest and hydration breaks. We were very well taken care of and had the most amazing experience, we are already looking at booking again! Cannot rate this company highly enough! Excellent! 🌟 🚲
