We rented gravel bikes from Cyclequest to ride around the Chengdu area and then a second trip around Lake Erhai, Dali. The service and bikes were excellent. It made our trip thoroughly enjoyable. I loved cycling in China. Bikes can go everywhere. It’s not the same in Canadian cities!.

This tour was one of the highlights of my whole China trip. I fully recommend booking a full day tour (even if not cheap 😉) as the guide took me to spots that I would have never found on my own. The views were absolutely stunning and it was such an amazing feeling cruising through this incredible landscape with an e-bike. The guide was very nice and helpful, setting a perfect pace, and took many pictures. The quality of the bike was also great. All in all - I had a perfect day!

For Beijing's classic mountain climbs—such as the 10.6 km Miaofengshan ascent (5.5% average grade), Jietai Temple, or the nine-hairpin Hongjing Road in Fangshan—we recommend the Specialized S-Works Tarmac SL8 (Ultegra Di2), Tarmac SL7, Tarmac SL6 Disc, or Giant TCR Advanced (Gen 9). If you prefer a more relaxed posture or plan to ride 100+ km out to the Huairou Lakeside Great Wall, choose the Specialized Roubaix or S-Works Diverge with 20 mm Future Shock suspension.
Yes, as a paid add-on at $5 USD per day. Flat platform pedals come standard; Shimano SPD-SL (road), Shimano SPD (MTB/gravel) or Look Keo clipless pedals can be added on your booking form and we fit them before pickup. Bring your own cycling shoes.
Riding in central Beijing (such as Chang'an Avenue, the Forbidden City moat loop, and the Olympic Forest Park) is flat (40–60m elevation) with wide, physically separated bicycle lanes on almost every major avenue. Once you head northwest into Mentougou, Changping, or Huairou, you transition onto well-paved mountain highways climbing between 600m and 1,200m+ with very light weekday traffic.
Yes. Every rental includes a mandatory safety helmet, a bottle cage, and verified WGS-84 GPX files for Garmin, Wahoo, or Komoot so your GPS never suffers from China's GCJ-02 map offset. Clipless pedals (Shimano SPD-SL, Shimano SPD or Look Keo) are a paid add-on at $5 USD per day; flat pedals come standard.
Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–early November) offer crisp, dry skies and peak foliage in the Western Hills and along the Great Wall. In summer (June–August), start mountain rides by 06:30 to beat midday valley heat, and always pack a wind vest—summit passes above 1,000m in Mentougou and Huairou are 8–10°C cooler than downtown Beijing.
