Sancha Lake (Sanchahu), in Chengdu East New Area, Sichuan Province, offers one of the most rewarding day-ride loops close to the city. Ridden clockwise, the 37.94 km circuit strings together a smooth dedicated marathon track, rolling public lake roads and short unpaved sections, with open water views for most of the way. This guide covers the route facts, the surface changes worth preparing for, the elevation profile, and the practical planning international cyclists need.
Our team last inspected the full loop on 13 August 2026.
Before you ride
Quick answers
How long does it take to cycle around Sancha Lake?
About 3 hours of pure riding at a moderate pace, or 3.5 to 4 hours including stops.
How hard is the clockwise loop?
Moderate. 37.94 km with 463 m of climbing — repeated short rollers rather than one sustained pass.
Can I ride it on a road bike?
Yes, if it is fitted with 28c or wider tires. Short gravel and hardpack stone sections punish 23c/25c slicks.
Where can I buy water along the route?
Nowhere. There are virtually no shops or public toilets on the loop — carry 1.5 to 2 litres and food from the start.
Route Overview
The loop circles one of Sichuan’s largest artificial freshwater reservoirs. Starting and finishing at the entrance of Chengdu Sport University (Sanchahu Campus), the recommended clockwise direction lets you work through the rolling terrain while keeping the lake on the inner side of the road for most of the circuit.
The terrain divides into three distinct sectors: dedicated marathon race track with smooth pavement, open lakefront public roads, and short unpaved dirt or gravel stretches. The distance is manageable for most active cyclists, but the continuous rolling hills demand steady pacing throughout.
Route Breakdown
Sector 1: Campus start to marathon track — approx. 12 km
Smooth asphalt on a dedicated marathon track with very light traffic, pristine road surface, clear lake vistas and wide rolling contours. The long rolling climbs start here, so manage your energy conservatively this early in the ride.
Sector 2: Mixed lake roads and unpaved sections — approx. 15 km
Standard asphalt mixed with dirt, loose gravel and hardpack stone, through rural scenery and lake views under light to moderate traffic. The unpaved segments carry loose stones and dust: reduce speed, keep a firm grip on the bars, and avoid sudden braking in corners.
Sector 3: Public lake highway return — approx. 10.94 km
Standard paved public road with moderate motor vehicle traffic, a direct link back to Chengdu Sport University. Stay to the right, stay aware of local traffic, and keep front and rear lights running.
Distance, Elevation and Difficulty
The full loop measures 37.94 km with 463 m of cumulative climbing. The lowest point sits at 412 m and the high point at 534 m.
The route rates Moderate. The distance is modest, but the elevation profile is built from repeated short-to-medium rollers on the marathon track sector rather than a single sustained mountain pass. Those frequent gradient changes call for active gear shifting and steady heart-rate control.
Road Surface and Traffic
- Marathon track sector. Exceptionally smooth asphalt with minimal motor traffic, well suited to fast rolling — though the short steep rollers still test climbing legs.
- Unpaved and gravel sections. Brief stretches of unpaved dirt, loose gravel and packed stone. Riders on narrow slick tires (23c/25c) must take care to avoid pinch flats and skidding.
- Public lake road. Standard asphalt in fair condition with low-to-moderate local vehicle traffic.
Mobile network signal is stable across the entire loop.
Who Is This Route For?
Recommended for
- Intermediate cyclists, gravel riders and active leisure riders comfortable with short steep climbs and mixed surfaces
- E-bike riders wanting assistance on the continuous rollers
Not suitable for
- Complete beginners unprepared for steep rolling hills or unpaved gravel sectors
- Riders expecting shops and services along the way
Recommended Bike and Gear
- Bike: gravel bike or road bike on 28c or wider tires handles both the smooth asphalt and the gravel. Folding bikes and e-bikes are fully capable too.
- Tires and brakes: tubeless or wide clincher tires with disc brakes give the best control on the unpaved descents.
- Clothing: high-SPF sun sleeves, sunglasses, gloves and a breathable jersey. Sun exposure along the lake is significant.
- Lighting: white front light and red rear flasher for the public road sectors.
Resupply and Pacing
- Pacing: hold back on the early rolling climbs of the marathon track sector so you have stamina left for the gravel and public road segments later in the ride.
Best Season and Weather
- Best months: April through November.
- Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable temperatures and the clearest lake views.
- Summer warning: July and August bring high temperatures and intense solar radiation. Start early to avoid the midday heat, and expect strong wind gusts near the open water.
Navigation and Safety
- GPS navigation: load a GPX track onto your bike computer or phone before departing.
- Gravel handling: slow down on the unpaved sectors to avoid skidding or tire damage.
- Sun and heat: apply sunscreen liberally before riding — shade along the lake perimeter is minimal.
- Traffic: pay close attention at the transitions from dedicated track onto public lake roads.
