Lijiang’s mountain scenery makes an appealing setting for an e-MTB trip, but choosing a ride involves more than comparing photographs and climbing figures. Legal access, altitude and off-road ability come first. A route described online, or listed in a tour catalogue, is not proof that it is currently open.
Our Lijiang day tours describe two distinct landscapes: L1 Boduoluo Forest & Yak Meadows, with moss-covered woodland and high pastures, and L2 Ganheba Dry River Valley, known for its pale limestone riverbed. Both specify Amflow PL full-suspension e-MTBs. This guide explains the bikes and what the rides involve, while separating that information from present access: Ganheba and Milk Lake are named in published restrictions and are not recommended here as an available ride.
Before you ride
Quick answers
Can I assume Ganheba and Milk Lake are open for an e-MTB ride?
No. Published 2026 local-government notices identify approaches involving Ganheba and Milk Lake among restricted routes. We have not verified a current reopening or permission covering the proposed ride. Do not enter restricted areas or treat a guide, a payment or an online product listing as permission.
What does the Boduoluo ride involve?
L1 is a full-day guided outing described as about 30 km with 806 m of ascent and a high point of 3,426 m. Its 3/5 difficulty reflects forest dirt, roots, rocks and meadow tracks. The listed package includes an Amflow PL e-MTB, local guide and simple mountain lunch; the meeting point is confirmed the previous day.
Does an e-MTB prevent altitude sickness?
No. Motor assistance can reduce pedalling effort, but it does not prevent altitude illness or replace acclimatisation. Fitness does not protect against altitude illness. Build time into your arrival plan and do not continue higher if symptoms develop.
Do I need mountain-biking experience?
You should be comfortable controlling speed on loose descents and riding over uneven ground. E-assistance helps with climbing, not braking skill or balance. Tell the team your experience before booking so the proposed ride can be assessed.
Which Amflow configurations are listed in Lijiang?
The Lijiang rental selection includes Full 29er and Mullet Amflow PL Carbon builds. Both list an Avinox M1 motor, 800 Wh battery and 160 mm front / 150 mm rear suspension. Full 29er uses two 29-inch wheels; Mullet uses a 29-inch front and 27.5-inch rear. Match the actual bike and size to your ride.
Boduoluo and Ganheba: What Can Be Established
Ganheba and Milk Lake: Access Before Itinerary
Ganheba’s pale riverbed and the lake known as Milk Lake are widely photographed. Those photographs do not establish permission to visit.
A 7 January 2026 notice from the Yulong county government, reproduced by The Paper, prohibited unauthorised activities in undeveloped, unopened areas above 3,500 m and listed approaches involving Ganheba and Milk Lake among routes liable to enter restricted areas. A later county notice dated 9 February 2026, reproduced by Wenlv News and other outlets, described broader prohibited areas and again named these locations.
We have not verified a current reopening or valid permission for the proposed L2 ride. Do not plan a visit into the restricted area. Buying a ticket for the main scenic area does not grant access to its unopened areas.
A guide’s presence, an entrance payment, or being outside the commercial cable-car area does not by itself establish lawful access. Do not cross barriers, ignore signs or enter a restricted area to reach a viewpoint.
Photographs Are Not an Access Update
The following photographs show Ganheba scenery. Water levels and appearance vary; the images do not confirm present access, a guaranteed lake view or an available cycling route.

L1 Boduoluo: Forest Tracks and Mountain Meadows
The L1 Boduoluo day tour heads into the hills beyond Lashi Lake, west of Lijiang. It is a full-day outing, with about 30 km, 806 m of accumulated ascent, a described high point of 3,426 m, and a 3/5 difficulty rating. “Full day” includes the outing and its stops; the L1 page does not give a separate moving-time estimate.
The route climbs through old mixed forest where moss covers fallen logs and pale-green lichen hangs from the branches. Dirt tracks include roots and rocks before the trees give way to open limestone meadows. These are the forest and meadow stops described for L1; the view of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain depends on visibility. It is a different landscape from Ganheba’s exposed riverbed, but still a substantial day at altitude.

Riding Ability and Trail Conditions
You need enough off-road control to brake progressively and manage uneven ground. Wet roots, loose stones and soft surfaces can be demanding even with a motor. Walking a short section may be sensible, but it is not a substitute for choosing a route that matches your ability.
Stay on permitted, established tracks. Do not cut across vegetation or ride towards grazing animals for a photograph. Ask about recent rain and any forestry, fire-prevention or land-access restrictions before departure.

The Lijiang Bikes: Full 29er or Mullet?
Our Lijiang rental selection includes two named Amflow PL Carbon configurations, plus a separate PL Carbon M/L listing. The Full 29er and Mullet model records share an Avinox M1 drive system, 800 Wh integrated battery, 160 mm front / 150 mm rear suspension, SRAM GX Eagle 12-speed drivetrain and Magura MT5 hydraulic brakes.
| Build | Wheel arrangement | Listed frame sizes | What to discuss with the team |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amflow PL Carbon Full 29er | 29-inch front and rear | M | Rolling over uneven ground on longer tracks; whether the available M frame fits |
| Amflow PL Carbon Mullet | 29-inch front / 27.5-inch rear | M, L | Mixed-wheel handling on tighter trails and the most suitable frame size |
| Amflow PL Carbon, separate M/L listing | Listed with 29-inch wheels | M, L | The actual wheel configuration and setup supplied for your booking |
For the two named builds, the size records suggest M around 163–175 cm and Mullet L around 175–183 cm. These are fitting guides, not a guarantee: the separate M/L build has different recorded height bands. Send your height and riding experience, and match the actual frame rather than relying on a blanket “fits 163–188 cm” claim.
Motor assistance reduces pedalling effort on climbs; it does not do the steering or braking. Full suspension helps manage uneven ground, while tyre pressure, suspension setup and rider technique still matter. Neither build makes loose descents or high altitude automatically easy.
An 800 Wh battery is a capacity specification, not a promised trail distance. Assistance level, climbing, rider load, temperature and ground conditions all affect consumption. Agree the route and battery plan with the team, and leave a reserve rather than planning around an Eco-mode range figure.
What a Lijiang Bike Rental Includes
The Lijiang rental package lists:
- A Magicshine helmet with a rear flashing light, required on every ride.
- Flat MTB pin pedals or Shimano SPD pedals, fitted at no extra charge.
- Pre-ride suspension-pressure and sag setup, brake checks and assistance-mode setup.
- A trail repair kit with tube or plugs, tyre levers, multi-tool and mini pump.
- GPX route information. Request a currently permitted route: a saved track does not override an access restriction.
Pickup is at No. 7 Minwen Street, Guadaiguo Hetang Town, Gucheng District, Lijiang. A rental is distinct from a guided day tour: do not assume that a guide, lunch or hotel transfer comes with the bike-only booking.
Altitude: Allow Time and Respond to Symptoms
At altitude, lower air pressure reduces the oxygen available with each breath. An e-MTB can make climbing less strenuous, but it cannot prevent altitude illness. Do not use how easily the motor climbs as a measure of how well you are acclimatised.
A lower maximum altitude does not by itself make a ride an appropriate acclimatisation day. Plan around your arrival altitude, recent exposure, symptoms and the final permitted itinerary.
Carry weather protection, sun protection, water and food appropriate to the confirmed ride. Check that the plan includes a practical way to shorten the day or return if someone becomes unwell.
Guided Day Tour or Bike-Only Rental?
L1 Boduoluo’s day-tour package lists an Amflow PL e-MTB sized to the rider, a local guide for the day and a simple mountain lunch. The guide confirms the pickup time and place in Lijiang on WhatsApp the previous day. That is not a promise of pickup from every hotel or an unrestricted transfer radius.
The day-tour terms also state that a customer leaving before the scheduled finish pays the additional shuttle and bike-transfer fees. Review those arrangements before booking; this should not be confused with a guarantee of free transport for every shortened ride.
Bike-only rental includes the equipment and setup above, while you organise the rest of the day. Renting a bike or receiving a GPX file does not grant access to protected or closed areas.
For onward travel, the 12306 restricted-items list limits ordinary lithium batteries to 100 Wh each, except batteries in electric wheelchairs. An 800 Wh e-MTB battery exceeds that limit. Plan an appropriate transport arrangement rather than expecting to carry it as ordinary train luggage; see our train-and-bike guide.
Our China cycling navigation guide explains mapping issues. Before any off-road day, confirm the permitted route, recent ground conditions and a realistic way to return if the plan changes.
FAQ
Can I book Ganheba from this guide?
This guide does not recommend booking a ride into the restricted area. A current, applicable access basis would need to be established before any such itinerary could be offered. An existing catalogue page is not sufficient evidence.
Is Boduoluo suitable for my first day in Lijiang?
Do not assume so. Its described high point is around 3,400 m and the route includes off-road climbing and descending. Allow time after arrival and discuss your recent altitude exposure and riding ability before deciding.
Does “no ticket gate” mean a route is free to enter?
No. Ticketing and legal access are separate questions. A protected or closed area can have no ticket booth and still be prohibited.
Will I definitely see Milk Lake or yaks?
No. Water levels, visibility and animal sightings vary. More importantly, scenery never overrides a closure or access restriction.
